Home of the discoverer of America, Christopher Col
In the village of Porto-Santo, at Saint Salvador de Poio, there is the birth place of Christopher Columbus, a world famous Galician sailor who was the first person sailing to America from the European continent in the year 1492. Captain Columbus lived in a time when Galicia's naval fleet sailed throughout Europe, from the Baltic sea to the Mediterranean. At the birth place of the ilustrious sailor there is a cross dedicated by a family member called Xoan Colon.
Poio has got calm beaches in Lourido, Chancelas, Ouriceira and Raxo and archaeological remains at Laxa dos Cervos in A Caeira, Castro da Sividá in O Pereiro and the cairns of Monte Mon in Campelo. From the Samieira viewpoint on the Castrove Mount, it can be observed Pontevedra, Marin and Bueu.
Concerning to feasts, Campelo Clam Festival (in october) is very important in Poio. Also we can go to the Combarro Sea Festival, in august, the Sheep Feast, the Renda and Combarro Pilgrimages and the Horse Crop in A Escusa in august.

The Monastery of Poio
The San Xoan de Rio monastery was founded by Saint Fructuoso in the VIIth century. King Fernando II enlarged its possessions and later on the monks established in 1548 the College of Theology and in 1613 the College of Pasantes, in which Father Feixo was a teacher.
Poio monastery has been declared Artistical-Historical monument. Inside its classicist-baroque style church from the XVIIth century there is the Saint Traamunda VIth century's tomb, which is much worshiped in the region.
Annexed to the monastery is one of the largest graneries of Galicia. The monastery is a huge cultural centre as it shows its ancient library, which preserves approximately 100,000 books, the Mosaic Museum, the Stone Carving School and the Open Summer University.
