Santo Ero of Armenteira
In the XIIth century the noble Ero decided to abandon his high society life and dedicate himself to the meditation in the Castrove mountain, hence founding the Armenteira monastery. Kings and nobles donated properties and privileges to the Cistercian monastery consacreted to Santa Maria. Nowadays, the ancient Santo Ero's pilgrimage is still celebrated in Santa Maria de Armenteira, a parish church declared Historical-Artistic Monument, every month of August and April, when miracles are performed in the curing of migranes.
Other important monuments are the ancient Benedictine monastery of Santa Maria de Nogueira, built in the XIth century and the parish church of San Martinho de Meis, built in the XIIth century, which still preserves remains of the original romanic temple. The pilgrimages of San Brais and San Bieito in Nogueira are of great enjoyment, as well as the festivals of San Salvador in Meis and Santa Maria in Paradela.

Good eating and good drinking
Illustrious families such as the Soutomaior, the Ulloas and the Monterreis lived in Meis. Example of this are the noble houses in Nogueira and Paradela. In Paradela there is the Quintans tower near the river Umia, and at the top of the Castrove mountain there are ruins of a chapel and some carved stones from the Megalithic Ages. The view from Castrove reaches Poio, O Grove, and the estuary of Pontevedra and Arousa.
As with all the Rias Baixas, Meis is a land of good food and drink. Meis is famous in the region for its Mosteiro meat and its traditionaly elaborated Albarinho and Cainho wine.
